Avoiding Financial and Legal Pitfalls for Caregivers
Tuesday, May 16, 1:00-2:30pm
Should I obtain a written contract to receive payment for the care I give dad if I quit my job to help him? If I move mom into my house, or I move into hers, what are the legal obligations? If a loved one loses capacity to make decisions for themselves, what documents do I need so I can make decisions on their behalf? These are just a few legal questions caregivers face as they navigate the caregiving journey. All too often, people take on the role of caring for a loved one without sufficient understanding of the critical legal issues. In reality, what we spend now, and how we document it, can impact possible Medicaid eligibility down the line or create major conflicts within families. Join Wendy Kanar for a discussion of legal pitfalls caregivers may face and precautions you can take to protect yourself and the loved one you are assisting.
