A Sweet Life is a diabetes self-management program which helps people with diabetes or pre-diabetes live a full, active life in spite of the disease. The program gives people the support and confidence they need for their health and well being. Multiple studies have been done on the effectiveness of this class. Findings have all been positive. Six months after the workshop, participants had significant improvements in depression, symptoms of hypoglycemia, communication with physicians, healthy eating, and reading food labels. They also had significant improvements in activity level and self-confidence. At 12 months, participants continued to demonstrate improvements. The workshop is given 2½ hours once a week for six weeks. People with type 2 diabetes and/or close family members learn current information on diabetes management, make weekly action plans, and help each other solve problems in creating and carrying out their plan. Classes are greatly engaging, with mutual support and success building the participants’ ability to manage their health and maintain fulfilling lives. Registration is limited so call to reserve a spot with Senior Services at 633-3700. This program is supported by funds from the Older Americans Act.
