A Sweet Life: Balancing Your Diabetes with the Life You Want
Wednesdays, April 18 – May 23, 1:00-3:30pm, Trailside Center, 4700 Dublin Ave in Midland
One of our very best classes is called “A Sweet Life.” It’s a diabetes self-management program which helps diabetics and pre-diabetics live a full, active life in spite of the limitations that the disease imposes. It’s very hard being diabetic. Not only do you have to monitor your glucose levels and take insulin when needed, you also have to deal with a whole range of other problems, many of them social and emotional. Doctors and hospital-run diabetes centers are very good about telling folks what they should and shouldn’t do, but it’s like being told that you should lose weight—you’ve been taught a lot of the do’s and don’ts, but it’s so hard to manage! The nice thing about “A Sweet Life” is that it gives people the support and confidence they need to lead healthy, active lives. Multiple studies have been done on the effectiveness of this class. Findings have all been positive. Six months after the workshop, participants had significant improvements in depression, symptoms of hypoglycemia, communication with physicians, healthy eating, and reading food labels. They also had significant improvements in activity level and self-confidence. At 12 months, participants continued to demonstrate improvements. The workshop is given 2½ hours once a week for six weeks. Participants learn current information on managing type 2 diabetes, make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems in creating and carrying out their plan. Classes are highly participative, with mutual support and success building the participants’ ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Register by calling 989-633-3700.
